China, New Zealand pledge to promote free trade, fight against protectionism

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key pledged here Saturday to boost bilateral and regional trade amid the global financial crisis.
During their half-hour meeting on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits at the Thai beach resort of Hua Hin, Wen said the China-New Zealand ties have maintained a good momentum of development and the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed last October between the two countries has achieved positive results.

The two countries should let the FTA play a greater role and promote cooperation in such sectors as the resource exploration, food safety, energy-saving, environmental protection, science and technology, culture and education, as well as tourism.

He also called for joint efforts against trade protectionism and to push for progress of the Doha Round talks of the World Trade Organization, which had been lagging behind its schedule.

New Zealand highly valued the friendly cooperative relations with China, Key said, adding that he was satisfied with the remarkable growth of the bilateral trade boosted by the FTA.

New Zealand is willing to deepen trade and economic cooperation with China, jointly promote regional free trade and fight against trade protectionism, he said.

New Zealand has attached great importance to China’s role in the fields of food security, energy-saving, emission control and in response to the climate change, he noted, hoping to enhance cooperation with China in this respect.

Chinese, Australian PMs call for early FTA deal

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd called here on Saturday for an early signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two Asia-Pacific major economies.
“The mutual-respect, mutual-trust and cooperation between China and Australia, both as big countries in the Asia-Pacific region, will not only yield tangible benefits for the two nations, but also have a positive impact on a larger scale,” Wen said in talks with Rudd on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits.

The key to maintaining a sound and steady development of bilateral ties lies in their respect for and care about each other’s core interests and major concerns, Wen said, pledging to work together with Australia to boost their ties.

The Chinese premier also highlighted the importance of an FTA between the two countries, asking the two sides to reach a quality, comprehensive and acceptable FTA deal in a spirit of positive cooperation, pragmatism, balance and mutual-benefit.

While hailing the cooperation between Australia and China in various fields, Rudd said his country is willing to maintain high-level exchanges and deepen mutual understanding with China under the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.

He pledged adherence to the one China policy and respect for China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Australia hopes to reach consensus as early as possible on the FTA and will bolster cooperation with China in such fields as trade, economy, investment, energy, agriculture and service, Rudd said during their meeting at a hotel in the central Thailand beach resort.

The two leaders also exchanged their views on East Asian cooperation and climate change.

China to encourage its companies to invest in ASEAN

China will establish economic cooperation zones in ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states and encourage Chinese companies to invest there, said a statement issued here Saturday.

“Both sides should also promote cooperation in the protection of intellectual property, removal of trade barriers and establishment of a consolidated system for sanitary and phytosanitary standards inspection,” said the statement issued after ASEAN-China summit.

China said it would also organize a forum on China-ASEAN FTA (Free Trade Area) to develop an FTA business portal.

By 2010, tariffs on almost all goods traded between ASEAN and China would be eliminated.

“This — together with the recent signing of the ASEAN-China Investment Agreement — serves as a milestone in ASEAN-China relations,” said the statement.

Bilateral trade had increased more than three folds over the past six years from 60 billion U.S. dollars to 192 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.

S Korea, ASEAN agree to establish strategic partnership

South Korea and the ten-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Sunday agreed towork for upgrade bilateral ties from the current comprehensive cooperative partnership to a strategic partnership, South Korea’s presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said.

The decision came at a summit between South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and the leaders of the ASEAN in the eastern Thai coast resort of Hua Hin.

During the summit, Lee and the 10 leaders of ASEAN countries exchanged views on ways to strengthen the South Korea-ASEAN relations.

Establishing a South Korea-ASEAN strategic partnership will significantly boost their diplomatic ties along with the economic cooperation, which the two sides has agreed to promote by signing a free trade deal on investment in June, Cheong Wa Dae said in a press release.

They also reviewed the implementation of a joint statement adopted by the two sides at their special summit at Jeju, a South Korean resort island, in June, and made joint assessment on development cooperation, low-carbon green growth and cultural and human exchanges between the two sides, Cheong Wa Dae said.
